Hill Forts

Hill Forts are or were settlements that were built on easily defendable, usually elevated and were surrounded with earthworks with stone walls or even wooden stockades with gates and an external ditch if needed. They are usually categorised as Iron age or Bronze Age and were still very much in use when the Romans conquered Britain. You will find the remain of Roman forts and temples as in Hod Hill and Maiden Castle. The Saxons and Vikings are known to have used out hill forts too when they visited our shores. As the population of Britain grew much larger hill forts were abandoned in favour of larger settlements that become the town and cities that we know today.
